Dress-down Fridays: casually dressed; serious about fundraising

Posted: 3rd September, 2015 Dress-down Fridays: casually dressed; serious about fundraising

As you'll know from our regular charity news round-ups, every month we host a dress-down Friday event across our offices.  The deal is this - staff come dressed for work in their casuals; in return for the privilege, each person donates a suggested minimum £1 to charity.

The charities who receive the monies change monthly, carefully selected by our staff.  Sometimes it's a national charity; other times it's a local charitable organisation; chosen on a rotating basis by our Manchester, Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Brighton sites to ensure UK-wide coverage.

Since our last update (read here), we've held three dress-down days.  June's recipient was Marie Curie, a charity which cares for cancer patients predominantly through home nursing, and invests in palliative care research to find better ways of supporting terminally ill people and their families.

In July, we broke from tradition to support Heart radio station's campaign for William, a little boy who suffers from Muscular Dystrophy, a muscle-wasting condition which affects about 2,500 children in the UK.  One of William's simple pleasures is opening birthday cards.  So, instead of the usual £1 monetary donation, our staff bought birthday cards for William.  The campaign gained momentum worldwide and resulted in William receiving 24,873 cards.  Each and every one of these cards played their part in making William's 6th birthday special and memorable.

Finally, there's August.  Last month's dress-down day was in aid of Beechwood Cancer Care, which is a day centre based in Stockport offering help to patients, carers and family members affected by cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.  Programmes include one-to-one counselling, complementary therapies and support groups.

Julian Bryan, Quill's Managing Director, comments: "Fundraising for charity is a vitally important item on Quill's business agenda in order to keep giving something back to the communities and disadvantaged around us.  It's good to see so many varied charities as our dress-down day beneficiaries and heartening that our staff are so enthusiastic about being involved in these continuous mini-fundraising projects."
